Home gym moves

Home gym equipment is often the heaviest and most awkward thing in a house move, and standard removal crews may decline it or charge extra. A home treadmill typically weighs around 80kg to 150kg, a multi-gym with a weight stack can be well over 150kg, and a rack with a full set of plates and dumbbells adds hundreds of kilograms more. Narrow stairs, tight turns and garden paths make it harder still.

Moving it safely usually means removing consoles, weight stacks and attachments, folding or tipping treadmills in the right way, and carrying frames with proper handling kit. At the new home, each piece is rebuilt and levelled, belts and cables checked, and treadmills tested at speed. Moving a home gym into a garden room or upstairs bedroom needs a check of the route and the floor first.

How it works

How home gym moves works, step by step
  1. Check the route

Measurements and photos of stairs, doorways and the new room confirm what needs dismantling.

  2. Prepare the equipment

Treadmills are folded or have consoles removed, and weight stacks and plates come off frames.

  3. Move

Frames are carried with handling kit and protection, and weights moved separately in smaller loads.

  4. Rebuild and test

Equipment is rebuilt, levelled, tensioned and tested so it is ready to use.

Home gym moves: FAQs

Will my removal company move my treadmill?

Some will, some will not, and some only move it if it has already been dismantled or folded. Many removal firms exclude heavy gym equipment, or will not reassemble it. Ask your remover early. If they will not take it, a specialist can move the gym kit on the same day or separately.

Can a treadmill go upstairs?

Often, yes, if the stairs, landing and doorway are big enough once the console or frame is partly dismantled. Measure the narrowest point and the turn at the top. Upstairs, place the treadmill near a load-bearing wall where possible and on a mat, and bear in mind running causes vibration and noise for rooms below.

Can I put a home gym in a garden room?

Yes, many people do. Check that the floor is solid enough for racks, weights and a treadmill, that there is a suitable power supply for powered equipment, and that the route from the drive to the garden room can take the equipment. Damp and cold can affect electronics, so a well-insulated room is best.

Do you need the manuals to rebuild equipment?

They help, especially for less common machines, but experienced movers photograph and label equipment before dismantling so it can be rebuilt without them. Most manufacturers publish manuals online by model number, so it is worth noting the make, model and serial number of each machine before moving day. Keep any special tools, such as hex keys supplied with the machine, with the parts.
